![]() The reason Zebra Obliquidens being an endangered species in the wild but thrives in aquarium hobby is due to the reason they are easy to breed. Zebra Obliquidens maybe the most common name which I'm sure most would be able to relate to this fish, if you don't want to confuse or get confused the scientific name is Astatotilapia latifasciata & it definitely refers to this fish universally. They can grow around 4 inches in length, these fish are mouth brooders & the female Zebra Obliquiden is a great mother. Astatotilapia Latifasciata has about 6 vertical black lines on their body, one line runs on their eye. Zebra Obliquidens is also confused with a true Victorian Cichlid like Haplochromis Nyererei these fish are entirely different species. Most aquarists refer them as Lake Victorian Cichlids this maybe incorrect as this fish no longer exists in Lake Victoria and also are believed to be extinct in Lake Kyoga, the only wild population is reduced to Lake Nawampassa in Uganda. Firstly, the common name used in the hobby Zebra Obliquidens is quite confusing, as 'Obliquidens' itself refers to a lot of fish from lakes in this area. There isn't a lot of information on internet about their natural behavior in the wild bits & pieces of reliable information & details gathered by aquarist gives us the necessary information which maybe used to mimic their natural habitat & care for these nice looking cichlids. In summary, our study found that each alkaloid specifically affects adult zebrafish behaviors.Zebra Obliquidens Cichlids are critically endangered fish in the wild, however they thrive in fish keeping hobby. Based on the results of molecular docking, we hypothesize that the behavior alterations might be a consequence of the interaction between alkaloids and multiple mAChRs in the nervous system. Interestingly, altered fear response behaviors were only displayed by guvacine-treated fish besides their lower locomotor activity. Furthermore, the fish displayed abnormal exploratory behaviors after being exposed to guvacoline. Similar to arecaidine, guvacoline treatment also caused abnormalities in zebrafish social behaviors. Meanwhile, zebrafish exposed to arecaidine have reduced aggressiveness and conspecific social interaction. According to the adult zebrafish behavioral test, arecoline was found to slightly increase the locomotor activity and caused tightening shoaling formations of adult zebrafish. Cooperating the results with the previous study, molecular docking scores suggested these alkaloids might bind to multiple muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), and various best binding modes were shown. We found that four alkaloids induced hyperactivity-like behaviors in zebrafish larvae. Therefore, this study aims to compare the psychoactive and potential adverse effects of four primary alkaloids (arecoline, arecaidine, guvacine, and guvacoline) isolated from areca nut on zebrafish. Areca nut contains seven psychoactive alkaloids however, the effects of these alkaloids on behaviors are rarely to be addressed in zebrafish. It belongs to the family Arecaceae and is widely used in Asia. Areca palm nut ( Areca catechu) has been listed as one of the most addictive substances, along with tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine. ![]()
